A-Audio Icon Wireless Over-Ears: Flexible But Spendy
Headphones come in every shape and size, which can make finding the right pair very tricky. There are truly portable models, the kind that can fold up into a small bag and you’ll barely notice. There are heavy monitors, that typically offer excellent isolation, providing you with a better listening experience but they tend to take up a lot of space. And wireless versions offer convenience but often skimp on sound.
The A-Audio Icon Wireless Over-Ear Headphones blend all of those things, and add noise-canceling as well. The company terms them the “ultimate everyday wireless headphone, with a cable or without”. The internal lithium ion cells offer pretty rechargeable solid battery life of about 12 hours, and though they aren’t subtle, they’re built from luxury materials like leather, memory foam, with diamond-quilted stitching for style and steel octagonal bezels on each ear cup. Comfortable and well-made, they’re practically indestructible, but definitely weightier than many competitors.
And yes, they’re foldable too, and come with a custom tailored carrying case. A-Audio brags about their three-stage listening technology, which basically allows you to choose from a trio of modes, enhancing bass, eliminating outside noise, or using them wired. Two cables are included, and we liked that they use the new Bluetooth 4.0 protocol, which includes support for high-quality apt-X sound. Controls on the ears take some getting used to, but operate as a full remote. One of the included cables does include a microphone, but you’ll have to switch to a wired connection.
Turn on the bass-boosting mode, we definitely noticed the difference- it’s maybe even too powerful, and on some tracks at higher volumes will distort a bit. We liked the previous A-Audio headphones that we checked out, and these carry in that tradition. Certainly hip-hop friendly, they don’t offer the detail and tonal range we want for lighter genres like classical and jazz, but carry a beat and punch it forward with the best of them. You can wear them for hours, and they’ll stand out amongst the crowd. The only major downside is the price tag- available in two color schemes (matte black and liquid chrome), the A-Audio Icon Wireless headphones run about $380 online and in stores.
