When wireless speakers are everywhere, everyone should have a wireless speaker. Of course, when you can connect just about everything via Bluetooth, then your small portable electronics can be happier than ever, and the only trick is choosing the right one from the wide array of options.
Thankfully, there are plenty of great companies out there with solid products, and it’s always great to see some of our favorite models become even better.
That’s the case with the new Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2, which is updated with a new 20% smaller size and the ability to set up the speaker in vertical or horizontal orientation.
We checked out the predecessor earlier this year and appreciated the many functions, which are basically identical here: from the built-in MP3 player and a voice recorder, speakerphone to the battery backup capabilities.
The newer model also features five total drivers- two high-frequency drivers, a woofer, and dual passive radiators- as well as the same battery capacity (6,000 mAh, capable of powering the Roar 2 for up to eight hours) all packed into a more compact unit.
As with many other Bluetooth speakers, you can pair via NFC if your phone supports it, and there is aptX support for higher definition audio.
There’s wired connectivity, both from USB or the usual mini-jack auxiliary input. Plus, you can plug in a micro SD card and play your music directly, which is very rare and pretty handy when your phone runs out of battery (or space for music, as is so often the case with iPhones).
At a bit over two pounds, it’s lighter than the original and will fit easily in a large bag but won’t quite carry nicely in a pocket. It’s also not waterproof like some of the competition.
The Roar 2 can remember up to eight Bluetooth devices, and there’s PS4 connectivity as well. And the audio signature is similar to the Roar, with pretty solid output and a decent low end (you can turn on bass boost if you wish).
There’s a little bit of distortion at higher outputs and it won’t fill a room quite like some others, but it sounds better up close than most. Available in white or black, the Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2 can be found online or in stores and is definitely worth the price at $170.
